My Go-To Sleep Essentials

Recently I've been having a bad case of insomnia. I either can't sleep at all, or sleep very lightly for a few hours. It all started in my second year of University and picked up again when I was undergoing my cancer treatment. I would feel extremely tired but was never able to get a proper nights sleep. My mind was always on and running even though my body was exhausted; I just couldn't stop thinking.

I'm not into synthetic drugs but a girls got to sleep! Enter my very own sleep essentials: rock lamp, soy candle with lavender, tranquillity spray and essential oils. This power group of remedies + some handy natural sleeping supplements helped relax and calm my mind and body during treatment and into recovery. I swear by these tools and it's always the first thing I recommend to any friends who are going through the same troubles. I know there are some skeptics out there, but don't knock it until you try it!

Salt Lamps
The Himalayan pink salt lamp is a classic, and yes, it's the same type of pink salt that you can put in food. I actually have both a lamp and a candle, which you can see in my photo above. These lamps make for a great low light lamp or night light. Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain. When heated, these lamps release negative ions and neutralize electromagnetic radiation from other household electronics. These negative ions will improve sleep, increase levels of serotonin and can calm allergies or asthma.

You can purchase one here! Check out Wellness Mama for more info on these lamps.

Soy Wax Candle with Lavender
You will never see a candle in my house that isn't made from bees, soy or coconut wax. Most candles are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is used in more than 95% of candle making, mainly because it is very inexpensive. Paraffin is the leftover by-product from the petroleum refining process. This petroleum by-product can release the same harmful carcinogens into the atmosphere as your car produces when gasoline is burned.

Natural wax candles are clean burning. They do not trigger allergies or have strong scents and can be combined with essential oils for pleasant aromatherapy. I try and buy candles that relax me with scents of lavender, champagne or earl grey. The wax burns cooler which means that your candles will last 30-50% longer, a.k.a you can save some money! Sleep Well Kit from Sage Wellness

Saje Wellness Tranquility Spray & Essential Oil
I swear by my diffuser. It was the best purchase of my life and I will never be seen without one. I'm even thinking of getting a travel sized one since I sleep so horribly while on vacation. During chemo, I purchased the Sleep Well Kit from Saje Natural Wellness. I fell in love with the thoughtful packaging, instruction manual and the products included in the kit. I purchase the oil separately since I loved the spray so much and the results worked so well, I bought 2 more bottles. The oil and spray are grounding, comforting and relaxing with scents of orange, ylang-ylang, lavender and chamomile.

Essential Oil $18.95

Spray $14.95
Sleep Well Kit $36.95

Like I said early, I also use some natural supplements called Ortho Sleep which help relax the mind and body and release melatonin. These little guys also contain valerian, an herb that helps relax the body - I promise you, they are amazing. Get yours here!
